Palm Jumeirah
Shaped like a palm tree, the Palm Jumeirah is an artificial island off the coast of Dubai. It is the first of 3 similar islands called the Palm Islands and was built by Nakheel.
It measures 3 miles long by 3 miles wide and consists of a trunk with 17 fronds (leaves), surrounded by a huge, circular crescent.
The Trunk – Shoreline Apartments and the Golden Mile
The trunk is connected to the Al Sufouh area of Dubai by a 6-lane bridge and monorail.
The Golden Mile will run the length of the trunk. It consists of 10 buildings, with over 800 apartments and 200 shops. To its right are the Shoreline Apartments, comprising 2 rows of apartment buildings (10 in each row).
The Fairmont Palm Hotel and Resort and the Fairmont Palm Residence are on the western side of the trunk.
The Marina Residences are located at the tip of the trunk of the Palm Jumeirah and consist of 6 luxury residential towers, each with direct access to an exclusive marina.
The centrepiece of the trunk will be the 60-storey Trump International Hotel and Tower.
Other developments on the trunk include the Tiara Residence (644 apartments) and the Essque Hotel.
The Fronds - Villas
The fronds of the Palm Jumeirah are residential areas. All villas sold off-plan. The keys to the first homes were handed over in 2007 with the remainder expected to be complete by the end of 2008.
The Crescent - Hotels
The crescent will be home to most of the hotels on the Palm Jumeirah. It also acts as a breakwater and is connected to the trunk by a tunnel.
Hotels on the crescent include the Taj Exotica Resort & Spa, Kempinski Emerald Palace Hotel & Residences, Kingdom of Sheba, Atlantis the Palm, Royal Amwaj, and the Jumeirah Al Fattan Palm Resort.
Monorail
The monorail runs from the Gateway Towers station on the trunk to the Atlantis hotel on the crescent.
